John W. Mills was born August 12, 1834 in Iredell County, North Carolina
&
Mary E. (Martin) Mills
Born: April 1, 1827 - Died: April 21, 1893
Little is known about John W. Mills and his family except for the fact that they moved west from Statesville, North Carolina via a wagon train, to Montgomery County, Illinois in 1853.
John W. Mills married Mrs. Mary Martin on 02-05-1858
When John W. married Mrs. Mary Martin, she already had 2 daughters from a previous marriage: Rebecca & Lucinda.
It was long thought that John W. & Mary Mills had only one son, Thomas Jefferson Mills, and that his remaining children came from his 2nd marriage. HOWEVER: According to the 1870 Census in Illinois, all 5 of the below listed children are shown to be his and Mary's. The youngest, John W. Jr was 2 yrs old in 1870. John W. didn't marry his 2nd wife until 1893, by which time all children were already born.
John W. & Mary had 5 children of their own:
- Jane
- Thomas Jefferson
- Paul W.
- Rufus
- John Jr.
That marriage ended when Mary died, in 1893.

Nettie Jane (Clotfelter) Mills
Born in 1866 - Died in 1932
John W. Mills then married Nettie Jane (Clotfelter) Mills on 09-19-1893
At the time of his death in 1910, at age 76, his 2nd wife, Nettie, was 44 years old.
John W. & Nettie had 6 children of their own:
- Mae Lucinda Mills, born 08/23/1894 - died 09/07/1961. Married to Warren Burch
- Ida Belle Mills, born 10/06/1897 - died 12/1975 in Edison, NE. Married to Mr. Mehaffie (1st name unknown).
- Edna June Mills, born 05/24/1899 - died 10/10/1951. Married to Claude Moore on 03/11/1920.
- James Lee Mills, born 04/20/1901 - died 07/20/1993 in Castle Rock, Washington. Married to Florence Harpham on 03/10/1924.
- Helen Gould Mills, born 09/12/1903 - died 03/1982 in Arapahoe, Nebraska. Married to Vernon Girch.
- Margaret Mary Mills, born 05/20/1907 in Arapahoe, Nebraska - died 07/02/1997 in Arapahoe, Furnas County, Nebraska. Married to Warde Wagner on 12/28/1925.
John W. Mills died February 5, 1910
John W. Mills is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Nebraska along with both wives (Mary & Nettie).
